Sign-Up to Be a Speaker for Career Pathways in Microbiology

Career Pathways in Microbiology is a virtual career panel that takes place in the Spring or Summer of each year. We are looking for speakers to talk about their career path, current roles and responsibilities and what a typical "day in the life" looks like. 

Commitment

  • March-Aug. every year.

Responsibilities and Expectations

  • Preparation of a 15-minute presentation on your career path, current roles and responsibilities and what a typical "day in the life" looks like.
  • Answer questions from the audience during the Q&A portion.
  • Fill out a questionnaire on your field. 

Eligibility

  • You must be an 海角社区appmember
  • You must be impacting the microbial sciences in your current profession.

Sigh-Up to Be a Virtual Speaker on Leadership Training

Leadership Development Training for Postdoctoral Women is a 3-part virtual training program that occurs in the Fall of every year. We are looking for speakers to present on leadership topics.

Commitment

  • Jan.-Oct. every year.

Responsibilities and Expectations

  • Attend 2, 1-hour planning meetings.
  • Preparation of a 1.5-hour session on a leadership topic with other speakers/moderators. This may include being a presenter, facilitator of small group discussions and moderator for the Q&A portion.
  • Answer questions from the audience during the Q&A portion.

  • You must be an 海角社区appmember
  • You must be impacting the microbial sciences in your current profession.

海角社区appDistinguished and Waksman Foundation Lecturer Program
The 海角社区app Distinguished and Waksman Foundation Lecturer (ASMDL) program consists of a scientifically-diverse roster of 16-20 lecturers who present at 海角社区appBranch meetings throughout the U.S. ASMDL lecturers also participate in career development and mentoring activities at branch meetings that benefit students, postdocs and early career scientists. Waksman Foundation Lecturers have specific expertise in antibiotics, translational research and/or environmental microbiology, and are supported by an endowment from the Waksman Foundation for Microbiology.

The American Board of Medical Microbiology
The American Board of Medical Microbiology’s (ABMM) mission is to certify doctoral-level microbiologists to direct medical and public health microbiology laboratories. The board accomplishes its mission by judging, by examination, the competence of microbiologists who apply for certification in medical and public health microbiology, and issuing certificates of competence to successful applicants in the name of the ASM. 

Commitment

  • 3 years.
  • 2 to 4 hours per month.

Responsibilities and Expectations

  • Uphold the integrity of the ABMM.
  • Review applications for eligibility.
  • Actively participate in board discussions that are conducted by email and virtual meetings.
  • Serve on ad hoc subcommittees as needed.
  • Meet deadlines.

Eligibility

  • Must be an 海角社区appmember.
  • Certified by the ABMM, active status.
  • Working full-time in clinical or public health laboratory.

Application Process

  • Submit your curriculum vitae (CV).
  • Include a paragraph highlighting the reason(s) you would like the opportunity (250 word limit).
  • Deadline April 15.

The Personnel Standards and Workforce Subcommittee
The Personnel Standards and Workforce Subcommittee’s mission is to identify gaps in personnel standards, collect the data to fill the gaps, and identify implementation strategies to support the profession and infuse the workforce.

Commitment

  • 3 years.
  • 2 to 4 hours per month.

Responsibilities and Expectations

  • Actively participate in subcommittee discussions that are conducted by email and virtual meetings.
  • Generate plan to conduct studies and generate data as part of the subcommittee mission.
  • Identify what type of data is needed to drive the visibility of the profession1.
  • Brainstorm key questions to elicit data.
  • Analyze data. 
  • Contribute to drafting a manuscript for publication.
  • Meet deadlines.

Eligibility

  • Must be an 海角社区appmember.
  • 3+ years experience directing a clinical or public health microbiology laboratory.
  • Published in peer-reviewed journals.

Working Group Member to Revise the CPEP Essentials and Guidelines (Immunology)
ASM’s Subcommittee on Postgraduate Educational Programs (CPEP) offers 2-year postgraduate training programs in medical and public health laboratory microbiology and in medical laboratory immunology. CPEP Fellowships primarily serve to train postdoctoral fellows to be directors of medical and public health microbiology and medical immunology laboratories. 

CPEP is currently looking for 海角社区appmembers to help revise the Essentials and Guidelines document for the medical immunology fellowship program.

Eligibility

Open to 海角社区appmembers in good standing. Must be an immunologist who is a current ABMLI or DMLI Diplomate and has completed an immunology program fellowship. The individual must also be actively practicing in the field. 

Commitment

  • Three to 6 months.
  • This is an ad hoc working group. The group will disband once the review is complete.

The member will help determine and make revisions to the CPEP Essentials and Guidelines for its medical immunology fellowship program.
